Computers and the microchip have jump-started our ability to utilize our knowledge. Soon you may enter a computer controlled physician's office without any humans in site. The computer (or Robot) will ask you what is wrong. It will take your medical history, family history, and list of medications. Then using various probes and other high-tech tools, the computer will determine what is wrong and offers treatment.
Don’t be alarmed, you will receive excellent diagnosis and treatment: The computer will not misdiagnose, make mistakes with drug interactions, nor mistreat. It will be more effective than I have ever been in my role as Primary Care Physician.
How long before the following happens? It is happening now! Gradually surgeons are learning to use “virtual reality” glasses that visually present a 7-foot TV image of the patient’s body. This allows them to use micro-instruments to perform the surgery, and to make tiny incisions into the body to insert these instruments. This dramatically cuts the recovery time of surgery. You may know people who had laporoscopic gall bladder surgery. It was not too long ago that gall bladder surgery involved one week of hospitalization and 2-3 weeks of recovery. Now patients spend a day or less in the hospital and return to work in less than a week because of the minimal incision made to the body.
Even coronary artery bypass surgery (heart artery bypass) is being done with minimal incision! Some bypass patients are going home in three days! The future is here now.
How long do you think it will be before robots begin to perform this surgery? A human will control the robot: The robot’s hands have perfect control. When we talk about this micro-surgery performed with tiny, superfine instruments, the human hand is too unsteady. Fear not, these machines will be better than any surgeon who ever picked up a scalpel. Surgery will be faster, less painful, and more successful than ever in history.
This microchip revolution goes far beyond medicine. Today, you can purchase computer programs that will write a family will better than any your attorney ever wrote. Simple programs far outperform your accountant, and the Internet is allowing you to do a better job booking airplane flights than any travel agent.
