The Future of Medicine: The Future of Your Health!

ANTI-AGING MEDICINE
Would you like to live to be 90 or even 100 years old.  Not so sure?  What if you looked like you were 60?  What if you felt like you were 50?  Do you believe this is possible?  It is possible to achieve these goals starting today.  Anti-aging medicine has arrived and it's time to begin Stopping the Clock.  The war on aging has begun!

There is no witchcraft involved here, no hocus-pocus.  This is hard core science brought to you through the hard work and computer wizardry of medical researchers from all over the world.  For the past 20 years as the Prevention and Wellness movement grew it became apparent that more healthy years of life could be expected.  Proper changes in diet, lifestyle, and vitamin/mineral supplementation brought increases in longevity and quality of life.  Yet, even with these remarkable changes, we were only slowing the clock, not actually stopping the aging process.

We began to notice that patients who required pituitary gland surgery and developed subsequent failure of the gland to produce it's multiple hormones took on changes of premature aging.  They were lethargic, and fatigued easily.  The actual output from their hearts decreased. They put on body fat and decreased their lean body mass despite careful dieting and regular exercise.  Even their hair and skin took on changes of aging.  They were many years older than their chronological age.

Today, many of these patients are reliving their youth.  Miracles have occurred in a manner of just months.  By replacing their missing hormones we have given these people a new lease on life.  They have literally found the Fountain of Youth.

"But, at what price."  Would you believe, with nearly no side effects?  By replacing the hormones back to a normal, age-related level (no higher and no lower) there are essentially no reactions.  It is important that the hormone products be of high quality (no generics, for example) and be dosed properly according to blood testing.  Otherwise, these patients live long and well, in a quite normal fashion.

And so began the key to Anti-Aging Medicine.  When we compared the hormone levels of people in their 70's, 80's and 90's, the patterns of decreasing hormones were identical to those who had prematurely aged from pituitary surgery.  We began to rebuild their senior-citizen hormone levels back toward the known levels of a 40 or 50 year old, and, well, you guess what happened: And happened without any apparent side effects!

AN ANTI-AGING PHYSICIAN

Only a few years ago the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine was established.  It is now the fastest growing medical society in the world.  Two years ago the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine (ABAAM) was created.  The first written board exam was administered in December, 1997. 150 Physicians from all over the world took this 4 hour exam: 137 passed.  In December, 1998, 50 physicians who passed the written exam then took the first 2 hour oral board exam.  These physicians represent the first double Board Certified Anti-Aging Physicians.

CREDENTIALS

When you read advice from drfit2000 you're encountering Mark Hertzberg, MD.  He is a real, practicing physician and double Board Certified in Anti-Aging Medicine.  He has also been the Chief of the Department of Internal Medicine at a hospital. Dr.Hertzberg has been chosen as an examiner of candidates for the oral board exam of the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine for 1999.  Click here for a full CV (Cirriculum Vitae).  It is vitally important that you know the credentials of any person giving you medical information on the Internet.

HORMONES: THE KEY TO ANTI-AGING

An amazing story, yet perfectly logical.  Your body is quite used to living with these normal hormone levels.  Hormones are messengers that tell the body organs how to work.  In reality, all hormones are controlled by the brain.  The major hormone center is called the Hypothalamus and is awash with a tremendous blood supply.  The hypothalamus measures and senses the volume of various hormones in the blood stream and adjusts the body's hormone output accordingly.

Mainly the Hypo sends out messengers ("releasing" hormones) to a gland just under the brain: The Pituitary.  This gland then sends out "stimulating" hormones to other hormone producing glands in the body, such as the Thyroid gland.  Finally, these glands produce "target" hormones that perform specific tasks.  Some of these target hormones include Estrogen, Testosterone, and Insulin (Yes, Insulin is a hormone produced in a glandular organ called the Pancreas).

All of these hormones circulate in the bloodstream and wash back over the hypothalamus in the brain.  The hypo measures and senses the levels, and the whole process begins again.  Of course, all of this occurs continuously and nearly instantaneously.  Wow, what a system!  Even pain is mediated through hormones called Prostaglandins.  By inhibiting their actions we can decrease inflammation.  This is how Ibuprofen works.  Anyway, you get the picture.

There is some controversy as to just how much relationship exists between all these hormones.  Endocrinologists seem to look at hormones individually.  They believe, for example, that if you're low in thyroid hormone just take replacement up to a normal blood level.  I take a more holistic approach believing that a low thyroid level will have an effect on the entire hormonal balance and many different systems should be evaluated.  It's not a big deal really, just a different approach. Of course, I'm right and they're wrong!

BUILDING A FOUNDATION

No one can take advantage of the anti-aging movement without building a proper health foundation.  There are four essentials to building a proper foundation.  All four must become part of your lifestyle.  There is no anti-aging medicine without a proper foundation!

1. No Smoking
I'm afraid that if you smoke cigarettes there is little I can do for you.  There are no magic potions that can fight this daily exposure to all those cancer and disease causing agents.  We tried beta-carotene, but it only made things worse.  It seems that the cancer cells enjoy eating the beta-carotene and began growing faster!

2. No "Hard" Alcohol
Hard liquor is hard on the body.  You're not going to die having an occasional cocktail, but, believe it or not, every time you consume hard alcohol, cells in the body die.  Wine, particularly red wine, is not considered "hard" and can be quite healthy.  Beer, particularly those with darker colors, may also be healthy.

3. A Proper Diet (and plenty of Clean Water)
We will not go into great detail here. Your diet should be essentially free of fried foods.  "Junk" food is just that: Junk! Fresh fruits and vegetables are the key to getting proper vitamins and minerals.  They also help your intestinal tract stay healthy thereby allowing the absorption of healthy products and avoiding the absorption of toxins.  Please become familiar with the 40/30/30 diet plan (sometimes mislabeled as a "High Protein" or "Low Carbohydrate" diet).  You should be drinking a goodly amount of purified water daily.  I have no idea if bottled water is purified (besides, it's too expensive).  I recommend you filter your drinking water.  We have a newsletter on water available.  If you wish to discuss filters try roz2000.com.

4. Regular, Daily Physical Activity
Notice I did not say exercise.  30 minutes a day of physical activity is required.  You may break this 30 minutes into 15 or ten minute segments.  This can be strolling, walking the dog, gardening, walking a mall, treadmill or stationary bike work, or running a marathon.  Get it?  Sweating and heavy breathing are not required.  A daily, consistent, continuous movement of the body is.  Get off your butt, and save your life!

AFTER BUILDING A FOUNDATION

Determining how your body is aging is accomplished via both clinical and laboratory means.  The taking of a good history and physical exam cannot be emphasized enough.  So often in the past symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, anxiety, even inability to handle daily tasks were ignored by doctors.  These complaints were often thrown into a waste basket called "Stress" and left unanswered.  Worse yet, the patient was classified as "Depressed" and given powerful medications that just hid the symptoms.

Signs of aging, such as specific facial wrinkle patterns, areas of weakened body musculature and fat deposition, or skin tightness should be observed.  Even the size of your jaw bone can give important clues.  It is helpful to observe pictures of yourself at various stages of your life.  These give clues to how you are aging.  Family history and pictures of your parents and siblings are also helpful.

Laboratory tests are important to determine deficiencies.  These tests also develop baselines to which the dosage of various treatments can monitored.  These tests are guidelines and are never more important than the history and physical exam.  I strongly believe the symptoms and physical appearance of a patient low in thyroid is more important than any thyroid blood test.

MAKING A PLAN

After determining how you are aging a plan is made.  At various intervals, you will be monitored by both laboratory and clinical means.  Perhaps the most important aspect of an anti-aging program is the requirement that the patient become the "captain" of his own ship, while the physician is the "navigator" (Please read The Future of Medicine.)  It is expected that you will read and educate yourself about anti-aging.  Keeping your mind sharp is part of the way to fight Alzheimer's disease.  You will have to teach others around you.  They will surely have many questions as they watch you physically, emotionally, and psychologically become younger.  Don't worry, I guarantee a great enthusiasm will develop, and most of your family and friends will begin to wish you would shut up already.

DHEA, MELATONIN, and HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE

You have, most likely, already heard about one or more of these hormones in the media.  Let me emphasize that these are hormones, not vitamins, minerals, or herbs.  Although DHEA is available at drug and health food stores, I strongly recommend you do not begin taking it without consulting with a physician.  You should most definitely have a blood level taken before starting any hormone, with follow-up levels taken after treatment has commenced.  How else can you have any idea of proper dosage?

The only side effects of any consequence in patients taking DHEA have occurred with overdosage or when taking a poor quality product.  I have, unfortunately, found very little DHEA available at drug or health food stores that is of high quality.  If you feel compelled to take the over-the-counter product, at least be sure you are following blood levels.  Otherwise, you are playing with fire and those who play often get burned.
